Wie gross ist eine Canon 40D Aufnahme?

Meine Canon 40D macht Fotos im Format 2:3, ganz wie die guten alten Kleinbildfilmkameras mit 24x36mm. Die Auflösung beträgt 3888×2592 Pixel. So habe ich mir das immer vorgestellt. Tja, bis der Zufall wollte, dass ich eine Aufnahme im Photoshop Elements offen hatte und gleichzeitig im Finder die Dateiinformationen betrachtete:

Während Photoshop wie erwartet 3888×2592 Pixel ausweist, beschreibt der Finder die Bildgrösse mit 3892×2586, also 4 Pixel zu breit, aber 6 Pixel zuwenig hoch! Statt 2:3 ist das Seitenverhältnis nun 2:3.01, eine zwar kleine, aber unerklärliche und in ihren Auswirkungen wohl auch unberechenbare Abweichung! Auch die OSX Vorschau, Xee und iPhoto weisen die auf 2:3.01 verzerrte Auflösung aus. Bin ich da auf einen Fehler im OSX gestossen?

Mehrere fruchtlose Google-Abfragen später wurde schliesslich klar: It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. Beide haben recht und unrecht. Die Antwort kam von Phil Harvey, dem Autor vonExifTool. In einer Diskussion im CPAN Forum erklärt Phil:

For CR2 images, you should look at ExifImageWidth and ExifImageHeight if you want to see Canon’s suggested RAW image size of 3888×2592.

I say suggested because the 40D sensor is actually 3944×2622 pixels, so you could in theory have an image as large as this. But of course, some of this area is affected by the black mask, so not all is useable. However, the useable area is certainly somewhat larger than the 3888×2592 images that Canon produces. The Apple raw converter produces 3892×2586 images, and dcraw (which usually produces the largest images) gives 3908×2602 for the 40D.

I realize this is getting a bit more involved than your original question, but I mention this so you can understand that determining the size of a raw image is not as straightforward as one might think.

Photoshop hält sich im Gegensatz zu OSX an die Canon Empfehlung, aber beide wählen einen Ausschnitt, der kleiner ist als das effektiv vom Sensor produzierte Bild. Und ich habe also keinen Fehler gefunden, sondern bloss eine dieser kleinen Unstimmigkeiten und Widerwärtigkeiten, welche das digitale Leben so aufreibend (und spannend) machen.
